05 Feb Singapore: Ate my way through the city
Singapore has transformed dramatically since my first visit decades ago when rotary phones were common and smoking on planes was still allowed. Today, the iconic Merlion still stands proud, but the backdrop has completely changed with the stunning Marina Bay Sands and Gardens by the Bay creating a futuristic skyline.
Arrival & Accommodations
Changi Airport is a breeze to navigate – clean, modern, and filled with lush greenery. A quick 20-minute taxi ride brings you to Marina Bay Sands, where the grandeur is immediately apparent.
The staff greets you at your door, helping with luggage as you enter the impressive lobby that runs the length of the hotel’s base. The highlight? The rooftop infinity pool with unobstructed views as far as the eye can see. Floating in crystal blue water while gazing across Singapore’s skyline is an experience like no other. Pro tip: Book a room on a higher floor for the best views overlooking the bay rather than just seeing the shopping center across the street.
What sets this hotel apart is the attention to detail – pristine furnishings without wear marks, perfect silicone caulking (a detail many luxury spots overlook), and impeccably arranged linens. While not inexpensive, the value for such a high-quality experience is excellent.
Don’t miss the Skypark
Observation Deck on the same level as the pool. Arrive by 6:30 PM to secure a prime spot for sunset, as the queues can grow quite long.
Gardens by the Bay
Access to these magnificent gardens is straightforward via the overhead walkway from the hotel. You can explore the futuristic Supertrees or visit the Flower Dome and Cloud Forest – both perfect for escaping the sun while enjoying lush greenery. If daytime exploration isn’t your thing, the gardens transform at night with light shows at the Supertrees at 7:45 and 8:45 PM.
Getting Around
While Uber doesn’t operate here, GRAB offers the same service. For the more adventurous, the MTR system can take you virtually anywhere worth visiting. Or simply walk – but don’t be fooled by distances on maps. What looks like a quick stroll can be a sweaty 25-minute journey, especially during humid daytime hours. Comfortable footwear is essential!
Neighborhoods Worth Exploring
Each district has its own character yet connects seamlessly to the others:
Chinatown: Bustling markets and affordable, delicious food
Little India: Colorful shops and Hindu temples
Arab Street: Beautiful Sultan Mosque and Muslim-inspired cuisine
Clarke Quay: Lively waterfront dining (and a slingshot ride for the brave)
Orchard Road: High-end shopping mixed with everyday items, including a Don Quijote for Japanese goods
Throughout your walks, you’ll discover stunning street murals in unexpected places and buildings with creative architecture, many incorporating lush vegetation in their design.
Adventures for My Best Buds, the Taste Buds
For those overwhelmed by choices, head to Maxwell Food Center for variety and authenticity. Don’t miss Tian Tian’s Hainanese Chicken Rice, but arrive early to avoid long lines.
Need a break from Asian cuisine? Common Man Coffee Roasters on Stanley Street offers delicious brunch fare and excellent espresso just steps from Maxwell.
Sweet tooth? Try “kaya toast” (ask for it without butter if preferred) or traditional Kueh – colorful bite-sized sweets made with rice flour, coconut milk, and pandan. Nanyang Old Coffee shop, with its vintage decor resembling “an ancient Asian grandma’s attic,” is the perfect spot to enjoy these treats with an ice-cold fruit tea.
For meat lovers, Satay Street is a must-visit. I recommend stalls #7 and #8, though all vendors offer delicious grilled meats and seafood with peanut sauce. Go early or late to avoid crowds and grab beer from the food center behind the street. (Those with peanut allergies should steer clear, as the aroma permeates the area!)
Even with just a day or two, Singapore offers endless experiences. It’s an exceptionally safe city with friendly locals, seamlessly blending tradition and innovation. Just don’t forget those wet wipes for your street food adventures!
